[edit] Definition of emotion?
Is emotion by definition an effect of subjective feeling?
[edit] Why there could be unconscious emotions
- Repeated presentation of an object increases subsequent liking even when participants are unaware of the presentation
- Affective priming by subliminal happy/angry faces -> pos/neg judgement
[edit] Experiment
- Present subliminal happy/angry faces (16ms)
- Present visible neutral face (400ms)
- Ask for report on emotions => no difference between groups
- Difference in consumption behavior; happy face leads to higher consumption (dependent on thirst)
[edit] Questions
- Only causation may be unconscious
- Shouldn't more thirst reduce influence of other factors like faces?
- May the change be explicit but still not be reported?
[edit] Weak theory of unconscious emotion
- Inaccurate labeling of emotions
- Error of attention, but in principle capable of being made conscious
[edit] Strong theory of unconscious emotion
- Affective reaction cannot be made conscious even if introspected
[edit] Neurobiology
- Automatic / subcortical / unconscious
- Cortical / conscious
- Liking related to nucleus accumbens
